Rules for Couples Counselling
When we are in therapy with more than one person, such as in couples counselling, it can be important to establish rules or guidelines that both partners follow during the sessions. Here are some reasons why we follow rules or guidelines during sessions: to enhance safety, to provide structure, to build trust, to set boundaries, and to encourage effective communication. When partners create these rules themselves with the counsellor, they are far more likely to hold eachother and themselves accountable. This resource includes a worksheet for creating rules, an explanation for why rules are necessary, and prompts for getting the conversation going.
